Flatlays in particular are hugely popular on Instagram and are a fantastic way to tell a story. I’ve seen some beautiful examples of everything from travel, blogging and business, to fashion, make-up and food. Personally, I’m a massive fan of using items around my house to make an image pop – it also helps add that relatable lifestyle feel and show more of my personality. Let’s chat about my go-to props that I can always rely on to up my Instagram game.
I’ve always felt like the background of a flat lay is the most crucial part. It ultimately sets the scene for the rest of the items so choose wisely! For my Instagram in particular I have around 3-5 backgrounds that I like to rotate with. Some of my favourites include my white desk, marble paper, bedsheets and a wood effect board that I DIYed!
If you’re stuck on finding the perfect bases and fancy a bit of DIY then I recommend you have a look on Amazon. You will be able to get self-adhesive patterns that you can simply cover a foam board with and shoot straight away!
Top Tip: Use as much natural daylight as possible when shooting.
Take a look at the picture above, the book is the spotlight item for this image in particular. By spotlight I mean it’s the main focus point, the item you want to draw the most attention to. Once you’ve picked your spotlight item be sure to place this down first and use the rest of the items to compliment it.
If you’re wanting to add a little something different to your flat lay then a texturised item is a great route to go down. These items can help your image come to life and add more dimension and detail:
- Chunky Knit Jumper
- Satin Shirt
- Textured Blanket
- Wooden Board (Example: bread board)
- Beach Towel
- Books and Magazines
The little things help fill the white space and can also set a theme for your image! Here are some general examples:
- Hair Clips
- Phone Case
- Fake Flowers
- Sea Shell
- Pens or Pencils
- Paper clips
- Food (strawberries, cupcakes, croissants).
- Drink (hot chocolate, coffee, smoothie).
- Eyeshadow Palette
- Perfume Bottle
Top Tip: Stick with a colour palette! For example, pink and gold or blue and white.
The Easy Go-To
Lastly, don’t be afraid to add in a little bit of your personality by using items around your house or room! Think about which items represent you and what you believe in. Take me for example, although I am a business owner I also love adding in elements of my love fashion. I do this by adding such items: hair clips, clothing items, earrings, bags, shoes etc.
