The majority of entrepreneurs seem to put taking care of themselves at the bottom of their to-do list. We all seem to gravitate towards this mindset that we need to be constantly working 24/7 in order to be successful.
And I completely get it, I’ve spent so much time feeling the same. However, since I’ve began incorporating just a little more self care into my weekly routine, my body AND business thanked me.
Even during the most busy business times, you need to take care of yourself. If not, you will sooner learn this the hard way and experience burn out. Trust me girl, it’s not a vibe.
The last couple of years have been such a massive learning curve for me. I used to run a fashion blog and would put so much pressure on myself to constantly be posting mass amounts of content every single day. Not long into my blogging journey I began to feel exhausted. I would work every spare minute I had to grow my audience. Fitting in photoshoots around work to showcase new outfits, evenings writing blog posts and engaging with comments. But then every month I would hit a point where I felt like I needed a complete break and would just stop posting altogether.
I was experiencing burn out.
Constantly I had to explain to my audience that I would not be posting for this week and it became such an awful habit. But at this point I still didn’t know what it was I was experiencing. I remember getting really frustrated with myself. Why did I need to take another break? This was just going to sabotage all of my hard work after all.
Originally, I thought it was because I had fallen out of love with fashion and styling. So I changed niches and began speaking more about lifestyle and travel. But the thing is, this didn’t change a thing. I still experienced the pressure and this feeling of overwhelm.
Which is exactly why nowadays I am soooo cautious about how much time I spend on my business and how often I allow myself to indulge in some self care.
How I Self Care
Personally, I’ve always believed and still do believe that self care can look different for everyone. It’s simply about finding what works best for you.
Here are some of my favourite self care strategies that I love to use on a regular basis:
Saying No: Don’t jam pack your schedule with tasks and meetings. Saying no to protect your health is completely normal and the majority of people will understand. Allow yourself to prioritise what’s important to you personally.
Eating a balanced diet: This is something that I am still working on but when I really focus on this, girl do I notice a huge difference. Simply make sure you allow yourself enough time in your day to cook a healthy, nutritious meal instead of sitting eating chocolate cookies (guilty!)
But for real, eating healthy food means your energy levels will be higher, your mood will be boosted and you will ultimately be more productive.
Sleeping for 8 hours: Everyone is different when it comes to sleep, but for me personally I find if I have 8 hours or more I feel way more refreshed and ready to take on the day.
Be social: It’s important to get out the house and actually talk to REAL people! Now, I know for sure it can be super easy to spend all day every day behind your laptop without having a single human interaction.
I recommend you schedule in some coffee dates or go out for lunch with one of your girls! I try to arrange a minimum of one social switch off per week.
Go outside: If you’re working from home this is so important. Even if you just find a local park or somewhere quiet and pretty to walk. Switch your phone off and just enjoy your surroundings.
Watching TV: I’m a massive fan of reality shows like Love Island so this would be my preferred choice of show! But, of course choose whatever is your favourite and switch off.
Pamper yourself: This is something I love to do. I always find if I look good, I feel good. So this could be a trip to the hairdressers or simply painting my own nails. You do you boo!
